Athletic Bilbao will win

Athletic Bilbao – Sociedad Match Prediction | 22-08-2019

Athletic in particular have really improved under Gaizka Garitano. They looked in genuine relegation danger earlier in the season but victory here would see them leapfrog their opponents and move to the brink of the European places, which would represent a massive turnaround. Both sides have since sacked coaches and appointed new ones and overall youd have to say they have both benefited from those alterations.

How we calculate our stats

Both sides need a result besides the fact it is a derby and victory in such an important game would be a huge boost to either coach as they look to immerse themselves into the culture of their new clubs. Its a game that is guaranteed to generate a good atmosphere at San Mames and it certainly wont be one of those Friday games that struggles to burst into life.

After impressing with Real Sociedad in the 2012/2013 Primera Division campaign, Real Madrid chiefs decided to sign him on 12 July, 2013 for a fee of 32.2 million. Back then that was the highest amount paid by the club for a Spanish footballer, but he failed to impress at Real Madrid. Asier Illarramendi is a product of Real Sociedads youth school. He played for Real Sociedad B between 2008 and 2011, scoring 7 goals in 93 appearances for the Basque outfit and he made his first team debut on 23 January, 2011 in a 2-1 defeat to Villarreal.

When the two teams met at San Mames Barria in the first half of the season they played out a goalless and yet another low-scoring affair is on the cards. There will be fireworks when Real Sociedad and Athletic Club face each other in the Basque derby at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta. Real Sociedad aim to return to winning ways in the Spanish top flight and we predict that they are going to leave their hearts on the field in the local derby. Following three consecutive wins over the like of Girona, Las Palmas and Atletico Madrid, La Real suffered a shocking 2-0 loss to rock-bottom Malaga in their last league match. Athletic Club are having a season to forget and despite the fact that they managed to hold Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in their last league fixture, we are tempted to put our money on the hosts this time out.

Overall, its hard to see this being anything other than a pretty even game. Therefore its questionable how much progress is being made, particularly at home where they still average just a point per game in La Liga this term. However they have drawn all of their last 3 matches and 4 of their last 5 in all competitions. Sociedad have become tough to beat under Imanol and obviously will take confidence from their unbeaten record so far in 2019.

An even contest looks likely and dont be surprised if this one ends level. Athletic are the favourites although only really because they have home advantage. With Sociedad playing better away, they look well capable of getting a result, something they have tended to do in Bilbao in recent years. That hasnt counted for too much of late for them though with just 2 wins in their last 9 league outings at San Mames.

This is the biggest derby clash in the Basque Country and theres still quite a tussle on to finish the season as the regions top dogs. With four games to go, La Ligas four Basque clubs are all grouped together from 11th to 14th, with Eibar and Alaves currently sandwiched between these two big guns, whove had poor seasons by their standards.

Now Trending Football Predictions

While the clubs have a relatively friendly rivalry, meetings are still often feisty affairs and this Saturdays clash should be no different as Athletic Bilbao seek revenge on Real Sociedad, having been beaten by their rivals at San Mames earlier this term. While other Basque clubs have joined La Liga in recent seasons, this is the big derby in these parts.

When it comes to Basque derbies, this is the big one as the regions two biggest clubs meet. There is an element of friendliness to the rivalry, which is in some respects reminiscent of the Merseyside derby in England. Athletics recent signing of Inigo Martinez from La Real and their pursuit of another young Sociedad star Mikel Oyarzabal this summer has perhaps soured that a bit though and there should be a real edge to the fixture.
